Museum – history institution – Sutjeska battle
Exhibition tells about battles that were fought in the wider area of Sutjeskariver, between Peple’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and combined German and Italian forces and their allies. Approximately 22 000 Partisans and 200 000 Tripartite Pact soldiers fought in the battles. Battles lasted from 15th of May to 15th of June 1943, and they stopped German offensive, while majority of Partisans broke from the stranglehold. Partisans suffered 7 543 casualties in these battles. Battles were fought on a difficult terrain, soldiers were hungry and extremely physically exhausted. People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia suffered great human losses. For all these reasons, in post war period these battles were referred to as “Epopee of Sutjeska“.
